Most local businesses that hire an SEO agency have the same experience at some point: you're a few months in, you're writing the check, and you're not totally sure what you got. Your agency sent something. There was a report. It had numbers in it. But you're not sure what changed or what anyone actually did.

That ambiguity isn't accidental. A lot of agencies keep their work vague on purpose because vague is easier to defend. At The Refiners Co, I'd rather just tell you what we do. If it doesn't match what you need, you should know that before you sign up. If it does match, you'll know exactly what you're paying for.

This is the Foundation package: $299 setup + $599 per month. 3-month minimum, then month-to-month. Here is what actually happens.

Month One: Building the Foundation

The first month is almost entirely construction. This is not an optimization month. It is a "your business didn't exist properly on the internet, now it does" month. That distinction matters because people sometimes expect calls in week two. That's not realistic, and any agency that promises otherwise is setting you up for disappointment.

New Website

We build a professional website for your business. Not a GoDaddy template or a Wix site with generic photos. A real site built on clean HTML and CSS, fast on phones, with your actual services listed, your city named plainly, and your phone number visible without scrolling. The goal isn't to win a design award. The goal is to load fast, communicate clearly, and give Google something worth ranking.

Google Business Profile: Claimed and Optimized

Your GBP is the most important piece of local search real estate you have. If it's unclaimed, we claim it. If it's claimed but thin, we fix it. That means: correct primary category, service area set properly, every service listed, hours confirmed, photos added, and a complete business description written with your actual services and city. This work alone can move your visibility before the website even has time to rank.

NAP Consistency Audit

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone. If those three things are inconsistent across the directories where your business appears, Google loses confidence in your listing and ranks it lower. We audit your existing directory presence, find the mismatches, and start correcting them. This is not glamorous work but it matters more than most people realize.

Initial Keyword Targeting

We identify the two or three search phrases that matter most for your business in your specific city. Not national keyword research. Not generic terms. Actual searches people in your market are doing right now. Those phrases get built into your website copy, your page titles, your schema markup, and your GBP. This is what tells Google what your business is and where it serves.

First Monthly Report

At the end of month one, you get a plain-English report. Not a dashboard with 40 metrics nobody understands. One page that tells you: here's what we built, here's where you currently stand in search, here's what we're watching next month. Numbers we can actually measure at this stage (GBP impressions, website visits if tracking is live, current ranking position for your target keywords).

Month Two: Active Optimization

Month two is when we start working with real data instead of assumptions. The website is live, the GBP has had time to be indexed, and Google has started to form an opinion about your business. Now we respond to what we're seeing.

GBP Refinements

We look at how your GBP is performing: how many people found it, how many clicked, how many called. If the primary category isn't pulling traffic, we test adjustments. If certain services are getting search impressions, we make sure they're featured prominently. GBP is not a set-it-and-forget-it tool. It responds to attention.

Review Request System Set Up

At Foundation, we build you a review request system. That means a short link or QR code that takes customers directly to your Google review page, plus a simple template for how to ask. Reviews are a ranking signal and a trust signal. A business with 40 honest reviews ranks above a business with 4, all else equal. We get the system in place so you can start building count consistently.

Early Ranking Checks and Competitor Comparison

By month two we have a baseline. We check where you're ranking for your two or three target keywords and compare that to the top one or two local competitors. You get a clear picture: here's where you are, here's where they are, here's the gap we're closing. This is what a good monthly report looks like. Not abstract, not vague. Named competitors, specific positions, honest assessment of trajectory.

Month Three and Beyond: The Ongoing Work

This is where most of the actual value builds. Months one and two are setup. Month three and beyond is compounding. The work is less visible from the outside but this is what actually moves rankings over time.

Monthly GBP Monitoring

Google Business Profiles can change without your knowledge. Competitors can suggest edits. Information can get pulled from third-party sources and override what you entered. We check your GBP every month, confirm nothing has been altered, and keep it current: hours for holidays, photos staying fresh, any new services you've added.

Review Monitoring

We watch your review count and alert you if you get a negative review that needs a response. At Foundation, the review request system is running but we are not managing responses for you. That is a Momentum feature. What we do at Foundation is make sure the pipeline is working and tell you if something needs attention.

Monthly Report with Ranking Trends

Every month you get the same plain-English report. It updates: GBP calls and direction requests versus last month, website clicks from Google, current ranking position for your target keywords, and review count. Over time this report tells a story. The line goes up or we explain why it hasn't and what we're doing about it.

What Changes Based on Data

Not every month requires the same work. Some months we update your website copy because a new competitor showed up. Some months we add a service page because you told us you now offer something you didn't before. Some months the ranking trend is strong and the work is maintenance. Some months something dropped and we diagnose why. The point is that we're paying attention and responding, not just sending a report and collecting a check.

What Foundation Does Not Include

This is important and most agencies skip it. The $599/month Foundation package is a strong local SEO foundation, but it has limits. Being clear about them is how you know whether Foundation is right for you or whether you need more.

No blog posts. Blog content is a Dominate feature ($1,099/month). Two posts per month, keyword-targeted, built for your niche. At Foundation, the website is live and optimized, but there's no ongoing content publishing.

No citation building. Submitting your business to 40+ directories is a Dominate feature. At Foundation, we audit and fix your existing directory presence, but we are not building net-new citations across new platforms. That's a deeper ongoing effort that lives at the higher tier.

No social media content. GBP posts twice a week and social media content are Momentum features ($799/month). At Foundation, we are focused on search visibility: your website and your Google Business Profile. Social is not part of the Foundation scope.

No strategy calls. Quarterly 15-minute strategy calls are Momentum. Monthly strategy calls are Dominate. At Foundation, your monthly report is the communication touchpoint. If you want a scheduled call with me each month, that's the Momentum package.

None of that makes Foundation wrong for you. For a business that just needs to get found, fix their GBP, and build a real website, Foundation is the right starting point. Many businesses stay at Foundation for a year or more and are satisfied. Others upgrade to Momentum once they see the Foundation working and want more.

How to Know If It's Working

You should not have to take your agency's word for it. Here are the four things to watch, and what movement looks like:

What Separates a Good Agency from a Bad One at This Price

At $600 a month you should expect transparency, specific local knowledge, and a report you can actually read. Here is what a good agency at this price point looks like versus a bad one:

A good agency tells you exactly what they did last month. A bad one sends a PDF with 20 graphs and no explanation of what any of them mean.

A good agency knows your market. They know the competitors who show up for your service in your city. They know what the map pack looks like for your keywords. A bad one runs a national playbook that treats a contractor in Monticello MN the same as one in Phoenix AZ.

A good agency tells you when something isn't working and explains why. A bad one waits for you to cancel and then says results take time.

The Refiners Co is based in Big Lake, MN. I work specifically with Minnesota businesses. I know what the local search landscape looks like in the smaller Minnesota markets where you compete. That is not a national agency sending you a templated playbook. That matters at $600 a month.
