10-Point Local SEO Checklist for Minnesota Small Businesses

Use this checklist to assess your current Google presence. Each item below is something most locally-owned Minnesota businesses get wrong, and something we fix for clients every day. Check off the ones you have covered. Be honest about the ones you do not.

Foundational (fixable quickly)
Requires ongoing effort
01 of 10
Google Business Profile is claimed and verified

An unclaimed GBP is the single fastest way to lose local search visibility. If you have not verified your listing, a competitor could claim it.

02 of 10
Primary GBP category matches your main service

"Business" or "Service" is not a category. "HVAC contractor" or "Plumbing service" is. The primary category is the single strongest ranking signal in the map pack.

03 of 10
Your business name, address, and phone are identical across Google, Yelp, BBB, and Bing

Even one character difference (St. vs Street, Suite vs Ste.) creates a NAP inconsistency that splits your authority across listings.

04 of 10
Your website mentions your city name on the homepage

If your homepage says "professional plumbing services" without ever writing the city name, Google does not know where you operate. No local signals, no local ranking.

05 of 10
Your website loads in under 3 seconds on mobile

53% of mobile users leave a page that takes more than 3 seconds to load. GoDaddy and Wix builder sites routinely score 30-45 on Google's PageSpeed test.

06 of 10
You have at least 25 Google reviews

The median business ranking in a local map pack has 39 or more reviews. 11 reviews and a perfect rating will still lose to 60 reviews and a 4.7 in almost every case.

07 of 10
You respond to every Google review, including the bad ones

Businesses that respond to reviews rank higher and convert better. A thoughtful response to a 2-star review tells future customers more than 10 five-star reviews.

08 of 10
Your website has a mobile-friendly design (not just "responsive")

"Mobile-friendly" means easy to navigate, tap, and read on a phone. Many older sites technically resize but are still unusable on mobile.

09 of 10
You appear in the top 3 Google map pack results for your primary service in your city

The top 3 map pack results get 44% of all clicks from local searches. Position 4 and below gets a fraction of that. If you are not in the top 3, someone else is getting your customers.

10 of 10
You have at least one blog post or page targeting a specific local keyword

A single optimized page like "Plumber in Monticello MN" or "HVAC repair Buffalo MN" can drive consistent inbound calls for years. Most local businesses have zero pages like this.

0 / 10 Check the items above that apply to your business.
0 to 4: Significant gaps 5 to 7: You have a foundation 8 to 10: Strong presence

Most Minnesota small businesses we scan check off 3 to 5 of these on the first pass. If you scored under 6, there is measurable revenue you are leaving on the table every month. The fix is not complicated. It just requires consistent execution.
